Federica Cappelletti, la moglie di Paolo Rossi, racconta la malattia e gli ultimi momenti di Paolo: «Era convinto di vincere, ma questo Mondiale lo abbiamo perso. Ora sarà cremato e l’urna starà sempre con me».

Racconta Federica che Paolo non voleva andarsene da questo mondo che amava moltissimo e che quegli ultimi istanti di vita sono stati i più strazianti. Ha lottato sino alla fine, convinto di farcela. Forse voleva fare gol anche al destino, malgrado il pronostico avverso. Ci era già riuscito tante volte in campo. La moglie di Paolo Rossi, Federica Cappelletti, 48 anni, giornalista e scrittrice, ricorda che poco prima che il marito morisse tra le sue braccia in un letto dell’ospedale di Siena è riuscita sussurrargli una frase. «Sono sicura che l’ha capita», dice ora lei in lacrime.

Che cosa gli ha detto?
«”Sappi che io crescerò le nostre bambine e sarò vicina al tuo primo figlio Alessandro”, che in quel momento era accanto a me. Poi gli ho detto di portarsi via tutto il mio amore e quello dei figli e di cercare di stare bene, di essere felice per sempre. Ci siamo amati ogni giorno, siamo stati sempre vicini. E anche Paolo me lo ha ricordato nell’ultimo messaggio che mi ha scritto».

Cosa le aveva scritto?
«Le leggo il testo integrale: “Purtroppo non riesco a dormire e sono agitato, guardo le foto che mi invii e penso al nostro grande amore. Vorrei solo dirti grazie per quello che stai facendo, per me e per le nostre meravigliose bambine. Sei davvero unica per le energie che profondi e per l’amore che riesci a dare in ogni cosa. Spero che il Signore ti possa riconoscere tutto questo. Darti tutto quello che meriti”. Era la prima volta che non parlava anche di sé. C’era Dio ma Paolo non c’era più, anche se coscientemente lui era certo di potercela fare. L’altro giorno aveva visto il derby Juve-Torino alla tv come un tifoso».

Da solo?
«No, era ricoverato nel reparto di neurochirurgia e accanto aveva il primario Giuseppe Oliveri, lo stesso medico che ha operato Alex Zanardi, una persona speciale. Il professore Oliveri stavolta non era solo un dottore con il suo paziente, ma un appassionato di calcio. Lui tifava Torino e Paolo Juventus. Si sono divertiti molto».

Quando era stato ricoverato suo marito?
«Pochi giorni fa, ma tutto era iniziato un anno fa, improvvisamente, durante un viaggio alle Maldive dove avevamo deciso di rinnovare il nostro amore e di sposarci per la seconda volta, dopo la cerimonia nuziale del 2010 in Campidoglio a Roma. Sono stati giorni straordinari. Tornati in Italia, la diagnosi. Ma sembrava una cosa assolutamente risolvibile. Poi sono arrivati altri problemi».

Quali?
«Mio marito si è rotto il femore, è stato operato alla schiena. È stata una terribile escalation. Nella nostra casa di Bucine, in provincia di Arezzo, abbiamo cercato di superare i problemi e lui sembrava più forte di prima. Quindi l’ultimo ricovero al Policlinico Le Scotte: aveva il tutore, liquido nei polmoni, ma niente avrebbe potuto farci pensare a un epilogo così improvviso, nessuno in famiglia se lo aspettava, né io né le mie bambine».

È stato difficile dare loro la notizia della morte del papà?
«Sono tornata di notte a casa. Le ho abbracciate senza svegliarle. E stamani ho acceso la tv. C’erano le foto e i video del loro papà. Ho detto loro che Paolo è ovunque e che il suo ricordo meraviglioso sarà sempre nel loro cuore. Maria Vittoria ha 11 anni, Sofia Elena 8. Hanno pianto, ma sono bambine forti come il loro padre».

Come ha conosciuto Paolo Rossi?
«A Perugia nel 2003, a una presentazione del libro “Razza Juve” che avevo scritto insieme ad altri colleghi giornalisti. Non lo conoscevo personalmente ma lo avevo precedentemente chiamato per invitarlo alla presentazione. Mi aveva chiuso il telefono in faccia, ma poi era venuto, ci siamo conosciuti. Mi sono innamorata subito del suo sorriso, della sua generosità, della intelligenza con cui riusciva a vedere le cose. Con Paolo ogni momento è stato bello, e non è retorica. Anche questi giorni in ospedale lo vedevo sempre bello, il campione di sempre. Affrontava le cure con coraggio, la riabilitazione con volontà. Certo, il morale andava giù a volte, ma io ho sempre cercato di spingerlo a continuare a combattere. Era la partita della nostra vita, il nostro fatidico Mondiale. Ma stavolta non l’abbiamo vinto».

Ha già pensato al luogo dei funerali?
«Sì, sarà Vicenza, dove ha iniziato la carriera da campione. Dopo la cerimonia sarà cremato e l’urna starà sempre accanto a me».
