Il Governo giapponese ha deciso di rilasciare nell’Oceano Pacifico l’acqua contaminata fino ad oggi impiegata per raffreddare i reattori danneggiati dall’incidente nucleare di Fukushima.
Lo ha comunicato il premier Yoshihide Suga, confermando le anticipazioni della vigilia e malgrado la netta opposizione dell’opinione pubblica, l’industria della pesca e i rappresentanti dell’agricoltura locale. Suga ha incontrato i membri dell’esecutivo, incluso il ministro dell’Industria Hiroshi Kajiyama, per formalizzare la decisione, che arriva a 10 anni esatti dalla catastrofe del marzo 2011.
Acqua Fukushima contaminata dopo il disastro
La manutenzione giornaliera della centrale di Fukushima Daiichi genera l’equivalente di 140 tonnellate di acqua contaminata, che – nonostante venga trattata negli impianti di bonifica, continua a contenere il trizio, un isotopo radioattivo dell’idrogeno. Poco più di 1.000 serbatoi si sono accumulati nella area adiacente all’impianto, l’equivalente di 1,25 milioni di tonnellate di liquido, e secondo il gestore della centrale, la Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), le cisterne raggiungeranno la massima capacità consentita entro l’estate del 2022.
Proteste contro lo sversamento dell’acqua in mare sono state espresse in passato anche dai paesi vicini, tra cui la Cina e la Corea del Sud. Nel febbraio dello scorso anno, durante una visita alla centrale, il direttore dell’Agenzia internazionale per l’energia atomica (Aiea), Rafael Grossi, aveva ammesso che il rilascio dell’acqua nell’Oceano Pacifico sarebbe in linea con gli standard internazionali dell’industria nucleare.
Il triplice disastro di Fukushima è stato innescato dal terremoto di magnitudo 9 e il successivo tsunami, che ha provocato il surriscaldamento del combustibile nucleare, seguito dalla fusione del nocciolo all’interno dei reattori, a cui si accompagnarono le esplosioni di idrogeno e le emissioni di radiazioni.
Le proteste
Cina e Corea del Sud rinnovano le loro proteste con forza contro il piano del Giappone. Pechino ha definito dannoso il piano per la salute pubblica, accusando Tokyo di aver deciso di smaltire le acque reflue nucleari “senza riguardo per i dubbi e l’opposizione interni ed esteri. Un approccio estremamente irresponsabile e gravemente dannoso per la salute e la sicurezza pubblica internazionale e gli interessi vitali delle persone dei Paesi vicini”, ha affermato il ministero degli Esteri in una nota postata sul suo sito web.
L’ oceano è “proprietà comune dell’ umanità” e lo smaltimento delle acque reflue nucleari “non è solo questione interna del Giappone”, assicurando che “continuerà a seguire da vicino gli sviluppi insieme alla comunità internazionale”, riservandosi di dare “ulteriori risposte”.
A Seul, Koo Yoon-cheol, capo dell’Ufficio per il coordinamento delle politiche governative della Corea del Sud, ha tenuto in mattinata una riunione d’emergenza per discutere la posizione e le misure di Seul sull’annuncio nipponico. “Il governo esprime forte rammarico per la decisione del governo di Tokyo sul rilascio dell’ acqua contaminata”, ha detto Koo in una conferenza stampa a fine incontro. Il Governo “adotterà le misure necessarie in linea con il principio di mantenere il popolo sudcoreano al sicuro dall’acqua contaminata dell’impianto di Fukushima”, ha aggiunto Koo nel resoconto della Yonhap.

Il Dipartimento di Stato americano ha affermato in un sito web che il Giappone ”è stato trasparente sulla sua decisione” e “sembra abbia adottato un approccio conforme agli standard di sicurezza nucleare accettati a livello globale”.
