A inizio aprile, nel giro di una settimana, il Bhutan ha somministrato la prima dose di vaccino contro il coronavirus a quasi tutta la sua popolazione adulta, diventando uno degli stati con la percentuale di vaccinati più alta al mondo.
Il Bhutan è un piccolo stato asiatico che si trova nell’estremità orientale della catena montuosa dell’Himalaya. Circondato per tre quarti dall’India e a nord dalla Cina, ha quasi 800mila abitanti e aveva ricevuto a gennaio le prime 150mila dosi del vaccino Covishield (il nome con cui AstraZeneca viene prodotto in India dal Serum Institute). E a marzo ulteriori 400mila dosi.
Inizialmente aveva però deciso di non utilizzare le dosi ricevute, e aspettare. Come ha raccontato l’Economist, il governo aveva consultato lo Zhung Dratshang, un’istituzione composta da monaci buddisti che ha un ruolo molto importante nel paese. Il Bhutan ha come religione di stato una forma di buddhismo tibetano e il clero ha un ruolo fondamentale anche nelle scelte politiche.
Al momento del consulto, i monaci avevano detto che le stelle non erano propizie per iniziare le vaccinazioni. E che sarebbe stato meglio aspettare due mesi e assicurarsi che la prima dose fosse data a una donna nata nell’anno della scimmia del calendario tibetano. E che a somministrarla fosse sempre una donna nata nello stesso anno.
Bhutan, le vaccinazioni tra canti, preghiere e rituali
Le vaccinazioni sono quindi iniziate alle 9.30 del 27 marzo, tra canti, preghiere e altri rituali di buon auspicio.
Da lì in poi la campagna di vaccinazione è proseguita spedita e l’8 aprile il ministero della Salute ha annunciato di aver somministrato la prima dose del vaccino a più di 470mila persone, circa il 93 per cento delle persone idonee. Ovvero circa il 60 per cento di tutta la popolazione bhutanese e l’85 per cento della popolazione adulta. Solo due paesi hanno somministrato la prima dose a una percentuale maggiore della popolazione, le Seychelles e Israele, ma per farlo hanno impiegato diversi mesi, non una sola settimana.
La campagna di vaccinazione del Bhutan è stata tanto efficace quanto gli sforzi per contrastare il dilagarsi della pandemia nel paese. Finora in Bhutan sono stati rilevati infatti solo 918 casi di contagio da coronavirus e un solo morto. Il governo del primo ministro Lotay Tshering ha risposto efficacemente alla pandemia fin da subito, imponendo una quarantena di 21 giorni a tutte le persone che entravano nel paese.
Tshering ha detto che scegliendo di concentrare le vaccinazioni in una sola settimana si è potuta trasformare la campagna vaccinale in un evento nazionale. Convincendo più persone a partecipare e aggirando i problemi logistici che la conservazione e la consegna dei vaccini comportano.
