Come tutto questo sia potuto accadere non è riuscito a spiegarlo neanche il ministro della Difesa di Seul, Suh Wook, che, nel corso di un’audizione parlamentare, si è limitato ad ammettere che i sistemi di sorveglianza in quell’area sono “malfunzionanti e obsoleti”.
Incredibile anche la dinamica dei fatti.
Non si sa ancora da dove il ventenne sia partito ma si sa che ha nuotato per sei ore indossando muta e pinne prima di arrivare sulla costa vicino alla città di Goseong.
Da lì, nascosta l’attrezzatura da sub dietro alcune rocce, ha proseguito a piedi lungo uno dei confini più militarizzati al mondo. Nonostante gli avvistamenti e gli allarmi, è stato localizzato mentre dormiva, tre ore dopo l’ultimo avvistamento. Si stima che circa 30.000 nordcoreani siano fuggiti dal loro paese per trasferirsi nel sud dalla fine della Guerra di Corea (1950-1953).

L’anno scorso le diserzioni sono state 229, a causa delle rigide chiusure dei confini ordinate da Pyongyang per combattere il coronavirus. La stragrande maggioranza ha disertato attraversando il confine con la Cina. Rarissimi i casi di fuga via mare.
In un editoriale pubblicato oggi, il quotidiano conservatore Chosun Ilbo ha puntato il dito contro l’esercito accusandolo apertamente di “indisciplina” e di “farsesca incompetenza”. E contro lo stesso presidente sud-coreano, Moon Jae-in, “impegnato a cercare di corteggiare la Corea del Nord”.
Moon, è l’opinione del Chosun Ilbo, “è caduto così in basso da volere chiedere alla Corea del Nord il ‘permesso‘ di condurre esercitazioni congiunte con gli Stati Uniti”, e cita l’opinione di un ex comandante militare che avverte del “grande rischio” per la Corea del Sud di “cadere sotto il regime nordcoreano”.
