Sono le parole della professoressa Ilaria Capua, direttrice dell’UF One Health Center, che a DiMartedì fa il punto sull’emergenza coronavirus.
“Siamo in una fase di stabilizzazione, i dati ci confortano. L’obiettivo deve essere quello di tenere le persone fuori dagli ospedali. Dobbiamo arrivare ad avere zero pazienti Covid in ospedale“, dice.
Nel Regno Unito è partita la campagna di vaccinazione. “Siamo in una maratona, dobbiamo vaccinare prima medici, infermieri e persone fragili. Il virus continuerà a circolare, perché stiamo abbassando la curva ma non la stiamo azzerando. Se arriviamo a vaccinare le fasce da proteggere prima dell’estate avremo fatto tantissimo”, afferma.
Il virus, dice, è sostanzialmente sempre lo stesso. “I piccoli aggiustamenti che il virus fa su stesso non sono rilevanti se non per chi passa la vita a studiarlo. L’obiettivo del virus è continuare a correre, per questo è così importante il vaccino per rallentarne la corsa”, dice.
Ilaria Capua parla di un’ipotetica terza ondata della pandemia all’inizio del 2021. “La terza ondata è naturale che ci sarà, ma la potenza di questa ondata sarà attutita da quello che avremo imparato. Dicembre e gennaio saranno mesi terribili per tanti motivi, negli Stati Uniti ad esempio si prevedono gli effetti dei movimenti che hanno caratterizzato il Giorno del Ringraziamento“, spiega. “Il periodo invernale è sempre complesso per la sanità, l’obiettivo deve essere quello di tenere le persone fuori dagli ospedali”.
