Giuseppe Basso è morto. Dopo un mese di terapia intensiva è morto il professor Giuseppe Basso, una vita dedicata all’oncoematologia pediatrica. Aveva 73 anni, è stato ucciso dal Covid. “È stato l’angelo custode dei nostri figli”, dicono i genitori di alcuni bambini che a lui devono la vita.
Giuseppe Basso, storico direttore della clinica di Oncoematologia Pediatrica di Padova, era uno dei professionisti del settore più noti a livello italiano. Era stato anche presidente della Città della Speranza, l’istituto di ricerca con sede a Padova. Nel 2018, dopo la pensione, venne nominato direttore dell’istituto italiano per la Medicina Genomica di Torino. E lì è rimasto fino al giorno prima di essere ricoverato in ospedale.
“Scienziato di valore e medico appassionato, con competenza e determinazione ha applicato i progressi della scienza alla cura dei giovanissimi pazienti, che nei momenti difficili della malattia in lui hanno trovato le terapie più efficaci ed un sorriso amico. Intelligente, critico, ironico, mai banale, di lui ricordo tante discussioni accese, animate dalla comune passione per la scienza e da una profonda stima reciproca. Mancherà a tutti noi”, ha detto Rosario Rizzuto, rettore dell’Università di Padova.

Basso era stato ricoverato in terapia intensiva il 17 gennaio scorso, dopo i primi inequivocabili sintomi: febbre alta e insufficienza respiratoria. Fin da subito si è resa necessaria la sedazione ma le sue condizioni non sono mai migliorate. Lunedì sera l’epilogo.
“Il Covid ci ha portato via la stella cometa delle cure per i bambini malati di tumore. Con Giuseppe Basso la sanità veneta perde non solo un grande clinico, ma anche una persona incomparabile per le qualità sul piano umano, che ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere molto bene”, ha detto invece il governatore Luca Zaia.
Chi ha lavorato a stretto contatto con Basso è Chiara Girello Azzena, anima dell’associazione Team For Children. “Quando c’era un bambino che stava male rimaneva con lui fino all’ultimo. Questo ricorderò del professor Basso”, evidenzia Azzena.
Una delle sue grandi battaglie fu il caso di Eleonora Bottaro, la ragazzina di 17 anni morta di leucemia dopo aver rifiutato la chemioterapia. Dopodomani, in corte d’Appello a Venezia, si celebrerà il processo ai genitori, convinti che la ragazza sarebbe guarita con le vitamine e terapia psicologica che prevede il metodo Hamer.
Contro questa decisione Basso, che era medico di Eleonora, si era schierato con tutte le sue forze: “Il genitore può pensare ciò che vuole ma io, da medico, devo intervenire e così feci con Eleonora. Fui io ad avvisare il tribunale dei minori e avviare l’iter di sospensione della potestà genitoriale”, disse Basso in una intervista a Repubblica, senza mai nascondere la sua amarezza.
