“Ancora non abbiamo capito che il virus ha un andamento esponenziale: una persona ne può infettare due, queste due ne infettano quattro… Poi arriviamo a mille persone che ne infettano duemila, questo virus può saturare i nostri ospedali e finché non avremo armi per combatterlo dobbiamo usare l’isolamento e la quarantena. Ritengo che il lockdown sia una scelta politica, trovare il punto di compensazione tra crisi sanitaria e conseguenze economiche”, afferma.

“Il compito della scienza è dire come stanno le cose. Faccio un esempio: il casco salva la vita del 40% delle persone che cadono in moto, in Italia è obbligatorio e in Illinois, negli Usa, no. E’ una scelta politica. Sono stato falsamente accusato di aver detto che c’era un rischio zero. L’8 gennaio ho detto che c’era un grosso guaio in Cina. Il primo ottobre ho detto che le cose si stavano mettendo male. Siamo alla fine di ottobre e siamo nei guai, se questa tendenza continua i guai saranno molto grossi”, dice ancora.
“Se si satureranno ospedali e terapie intensive, le persone saranno curate peggio. Non abbiamo un farmaco risolutivo, ma abbiamo imparato a curare meglio le persone. Ma ci devono essere le possibilità di curare le persone. Come conciliare le esigenze dei vari cittadini è responsabilità della politica, è importante non commettere l’errore di sottovalutare la situazione che io definisco grave”, osserva.
“L’8 ottobre avevamo in terapia intensiva 358 persone. Secondo l’andamento dell’epidemia nei 3-4 giorni successivi è stata calcolata una funzione esponenziale che ha predetto per oggi 1521 casi: ce ne sono 1536, la previsione è stata perfetta. Se continuerà ad essere perfetta, il 2 novembre ce ne saranno quasi 2200 e il 9 novembre quasi 3700. Nel primo lockdown abbiamo visto che le terapie intensive hanno iniziato a svuotarsi 20 giorni dopo le chiusure”.
“Diciamo le cose come stanno. Non sappiamo nemmeno se questo vaccino ci sarà, aspettiamo i dati. Immaginiamo di essere con la Nazionale all’inizio della finale di Coppa del Mondo. Essere arrivati in finale è importante. Il vaccino ha vinto le eliminatorie, i quarti di finale, le semifinali: ora è in finale ma non ha ancora vinto”
