“Avete sentito sicuramente diversi politici (per fortuna non italiani) auspicare il raggiungimento dell’immunità di gregge attraverso la diffusione dell’infezione naturale da coronavirus. Uno studio recente apparso su Lancet indica che questa strada non è percorribile.
Infatti, mentre in Italia le indagini sierologiche vanno a rilento, iniziano a essere pubblicati i dati riguardo alla sieroprevalenza (ovvero il numero di persone che hanno nel loro sangue gli anticorpi contro il coronavirus) in zone dove l’epidemia è stata particolarmente intensa.

Tralasciando i numeri, che chi vuole può andarsi a vedere nei riferimenti bibliografici che su Medical Facts non mancano mai, la sostanza è molto semplice. La grandissima parte della popolazione (sopra l’80%) non è entrata in contatto con il virus, anche nelle zone dove il virus ha avuto una intensa circolazione. Questo è accaduto anche nelle nazioni – come la Svezia – dove non c’è stato un lockdown particolarmente severo.

Ovviamente questi studi hanno limitazioni: misurano gli anticorpi e ancora non sappiamo che relazione ci sia tra la presenza degli anticorpi e la protezione e neppure siamo certi che tutti gli individui infettati abbiano poi sviluppato la sieropositività, per cui questi dati hanno un’area di incertezza. Per non essere quindi tacciati di partigianeria, a questo punto lasciamo la parola all’editoriale di Lancet, che testualmente dice:
«Considerando queste scoperte, qualunque proposta che speri di ottenere l’immunità di gregge attraverso l’infezione naturale non solo è inaccettabile dal punto di vista etico, ma pure destinata a non ottenere il risultato sperato. Con una gran parte della popolazione ancora suscettibile all’infezione, la circolazione del virus può ritornare velocemente a quella che caratterizzava l’inizio della pandemia se si abbandonano le misure di prevenzione».
Insomma, come per tutte le altre infezioni, per l’immunità di gregge ci vuole il vaccino; nel frattempo – senza paura e senza panico – continuiamo a vivere la nostra vita di sempre con qualche precauzione in più. Portare la mascherina nei luoghi affollati non è un sacrificio così drammatico, e sono sicuro che il disagio è solo questione di abitudine”.
