«L’altro ieri è stata una giornata molto triste. Guardando in diretta quelle immagini in tv confesso di aver pianto ore, ero sgomento, uno scempio: quanto accaduto a Capitol Hill a mio parere è un colpo a ogni logica. Mai da cittadino americano avrei creduto di vedere persone armate irrompere e assaltare il simbolo di una delle più grandi democrazie del mondo come quella statunitense. Qualcosa, che non ci rappresenta, che mi auguro sia di insegnamento, perché questo non accada mai più, per ripartire con una pagina nuova ne sono certo, la dimostrazione che la violenza non può vincere sulla democrazia».

Raggiunto dall’ANSA a New York, sua città natale, e poi al telefono con il Corriere, Joe Bastianich, classe 1968, è ancora incredulo. A metà tra gli States, dove i genitori — esuli istriani che proprio nella Grande Mela hanno fatto fortuna con la ristorazione — e l’Italia, dove si è fatto conoscere e amare grazie alla televisione — è stato giudice di MasterChef che ha lasciato per dedicarsi ai suoi ristoranti — l’imprenditore si è lasciato andare a uno sfogo davvero amareggiato.
«In genere — ha aggiunto — non commento fatti inerenti la politica non perché temo qualcuno, ma per pudore e competenze che ognuno ha. Ma questo è un fatto di portata troppo grande in effetti, riguarda ciascun singolo individuo. Non è normale. Mi mette in imbarazzoanche con i miei amici italiani: mi dispiace che abbiano visto l’America in quelle condizioni. Però è anche un modo per far capire. Vedete, l’America non è solo New York, Los Angeles, Miami. Ci sono persone fragili, siamo un Paese con dei problemi, con dei lati oscuri, come tutti i Paesi».
«È anche vero — ha continuato — che la fragilità della democrazia viene gestita non solo dal potere politico, ma anche dal popolo. Siamo noi stessi a dover fare di più, a dover vigilare su un bene fragile che va sempre difeso, anche in Paesi, proprio come gli Stati Uniti, in cui la democrazia sembra un bene ormai ampiamente acquisito. E il primo passo nella difesa della democrazia sta nell’accettazione delle sue regole. Ieri insomma, nella tristezza, mi sono sentito più patriottico che mai: ognuno di noi deve difendere ogni giorno i valori della democrazia».
“Il 25 emendamento? Una prassi complicata”
«Credo che sarà fatto un lavoro di intelligence, come per l’11 settembre. Le immagini parlano chiaro, anche l’Fbi: scopriremo prima o poi se c’è stata o meno una regia».
E mentre tutto il mondo si interroga, tra una polemica e l’altra, a Washington è stato dichiarato lo stato d’emergenza fino al prossimo 21 gennaio. C’è chi parla con insistenza del 25 emendamento, ratificato nel 1967. Quello per cui il vicepresidente può richiedere, con l’appoggio del governo, di rimuovere un presidente incapace di trasferire il potere, oppure non intenzionato a farlo.
Un’ipotesi che sta prendendo sempre più piede. E che Bastianich ha così commentato: «Molti parlano di questo, ma è anche vero che è una prassi abbastanza complicata e lunga da applicare, quindi non so se prima di 15 giorni o si potrebbe eseguire immediatamente, su questo lascio rispondere agli esperti. Dal mio punto di vista dico semplicemente che non vedo l’ora ci sia questo cambio alla presidenza: veniamo da anni che hanno creato fragilità, ora speriamo tutti in un ritorno alla normalità nella gestione del Paese, a un ambiente politico più positivo. Non c’entra il colore politico, non c’entra l’essere repubblicani o democratici, c’entra il governare per le persone».

«Ma ora vedrete la risposta degli americani: una scena del genere non ci sarà mai più, è stata una lezione e non si ripeterà. Siamo ottimisti e proattivi, sapremo riprenderci. Anche dalla pandemia: qui è un vero disastro. Io ho sei ristoranti a Los Angeles che fanno solo asporto, a New York facciamo asporto e abbiamo i tavoli all’aperto. Ma è un crollo di fatturato quasi totale, abbiamo salvato forse il 10-20 per cento rispetto a quello che producevamo un anno fa. Ho capito che l’unica cosa da fare adesso è sopravvivere fino a quando questa storia non finirà. E allora ripartiremo, tutto il settore ripartirà. Ne sono certo: ci saranno opportunità, bisognerà solo avere grinta. Se adesso viviamo giorni bui, torneranno quelli con la luce».
