Fra i morti anche Eric Talley, 51 anni, poliziotto eroe, il primo ad arrivare sul posto, ucciso mentre tentava di intervenire. Il killer è stato poi successivamente ferito ed arrestato. La sua identità non è stata rivelata così come per ora restano oscure le sue motivazioni.
L’allarme è scattato intorno alle 14.30 locali: poco dopo l’agente Talley è arrivato sul posto ed è stato freddato dal killer. Alle 14.49 un tweet della polizia ha invitato tutti a tenersi alla larga dall’area mentre l’edificio veniva presidiato. Dall’interno, l’uomo ha cominciato a sparare pure contro gli agenti e agli uomini dello Swat Team, con un’arma a canna lunga: secondo i testimoni, appunto, un fucile d’assalto.

Si sentono gli spari, la polizia che gli intima di uscire (“arrenditi, l’edificio è circondato”) e infine si vede un uomo ammanettato a torso nudo, in calzoncini, con la gamba destra sanguinante.
Eric Talley era sposato e aveva sette figli: il più piccolo di 7 anni e il maggiore di 20. “Non mi sorprende che sia stato il primo a intervenire. Amava il suo lavoro”, ha raccontato il padre a un’emittente televisiva locale. Ma era da qualche tempo che il figlio aveva espresso il desiderio di lavorare come operatore di droni: sarebbe stato un lavoro più sicuro.
