Anthony Fauci, direttore dell’Istituto nazionale di allergie e malattie infettive degli Stati Uniti, ha definito “deludente” il fatto che, a oggi, non siano stati vaccinati come previsto 20 milioni di americani.
“Ci sarebbe piaciuto vedere il programma vaccinale funzionare senza intoppi e distribuire almeno 20 milioni di dosi entro la fine del 2020. Come indicavano le proiezioni – ha detto Fauci al Today Show della Nbc – Ovviamente non è successo, e questo è deludente”.
A oggi, ultimo giorno dell’anno, sono stati vaccinati solo 2,6 milioni di americani. “Siamo d’accordo che il numero è più basso di quello che speravamo”, ha ammesso Moncef Slaoui, consigliere scientifico dell’operazione per la vaccinazione negli Stati Uniti Warp Speed. Ed ha aggiunto: “Sappiamo di dover fare meglio e lavoriamo duro per fare meglio”.
Nelle settimane scorse, le autorità americane avevano fatto sapere di avere la disponibilità di 40 milioni di dosi di vaccino per il mese di dicembre. E sarebbero dovute essere sufficienti per vaccinare 20 milioni di americani.
“C’è bisogno di molti più sforzi – ha proseguito Fauci – in termini di risorse. Per gli stati, le città, le contee, e tutti quei luoghi in cui il vaccino sta entrando nelle braccia delle persone. È necessario sostenere i gruppi locali, gli stati e le città, per aiutarli a portare a termine questo compito straordinario”.
Alla domanda sulla possibilità che il governo federale intervenga assumendosi lo sforzo di vaccinare gli americani, Fauci ha suggerito che una soluzione migliore sarebbe “fornire più risorse e lavorare a stretto contato con le amministrazioni locali, piuttosto che subentrare al loro posto”.
