Cresce la preoccupazione per la cosiddetta variante brasiliana di coronavirus Sars-CoV-2. Ne ha parlato anche Massimo Galli, infettivologo dell’ospedale Sacco e dell’università degli Studi di Milano. “È una variante bella tosta, che ci tocca studiare e studiare parecchio. E chiudere i voli dal Brasile è stata una decisione necessaria e sacrosanta“. Galli non nasconde timori per la nuova ‘versione’ del patogeno responsabile di Covid-19.
“La variante brasiliana, che ha fatto già chiudere l’Inghilterra, è una cosa pesante purtroppo“, avverte l’esperto. “Quello che è capitato a Manaus – sottolinea – mette la pietra tombale sulla strategia di chi ha in mente di far circolare il virus indisturbato per arrivare a un’immunità di gregge a furia di infezioni. A Manaus è accaduto invece che, lasciando girare il virus come gli pare, si è avuta sì una percentuale importante di gente che si è infettata e quindi immunizzata, ma non importante abbastanza per creare una vera barriera. È successo quindi che il virus ha sviluppato la mutazione giusta per tornare a essere in grado di colpire non solo quelli che non aveva ancora infettato, ma in qualche caso a quanto pare anche quelli che si erano già ammalati. È un elemento di notevole preoccupazione”, ammonisce l’esperto.
“Ancora non sappiamo se i vaccini sono efficaci”
La variante brasiliana mette a rischio l’efficacia dei vaccini? “Non lo sappiamo ancora“, risponde Galli. “La mutazione 501 alla fine pare di no, ma la 484k, che in un ceppo brasiliano si associa alla 501y, non sappiamo ancora se il vaccino la prende o non la prende e credo che verificarlo sarà il primo lavoro che faranno alla Pfizer. Le mutazioni virali emergono casualmente – ricorda lo specialista – ma se sono vantaggiose, la ‘prole'” del primo virus che in cui compare “la mantiene” e questo sembra essere il caso. “Arrivasse mai una buona notizia”, ha concluso Galli.
