Sul Covid battaglia lunga. Ma anche un pizzico di ottimismo. «In questo momento, siamo a un punto critico della pandemia. La curva dei contagi sta crescendo e, per la seconda settima settimana consecutiva, abbiamo avuto più di 4,4 milioni di nuovi casi segnalati». Così la responsabile tecnica dell’Oms, Maria Van Kerkhove, durante la conferenza stampa sul monitoraggio dei dati.
«Un anno fa abbiamo avuto circa 500.000 casi segnalati per settimana – ha spiegato ancora la rappresentante dell’Organizzazione mondiale della sanità – La scorsa settimana, invece, abbiamo avuto 4,4 milioni di casi e se consultate il nostro sito web e guardate la traiettoria della pandemia in questo momento, vedrete che sta crescendo in modo esponenziale».
Il direttore generale dell’Oms Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, ha poi aggiunto che la pandemia «è ancora lontana dalla fine», sottolineando che però, nonostante i numeri, «abbiamo diverse ragioni per essere ottimisti».
OMS conferenza: “Stop alla vendita di mammiferi selvatici vivi”
L’Oms poi, ha chiesto la sospensione della vendita di mammiferi selvatici vivi nei mercati alimentari di tutto il mondo. Questo a causa dell’elevato rischio di trasmissione di nuove malattie infettive all’uomo. «In particolare gli animali selvatici sono la fonte di oltre il 70% di tutte le malattie infettive emergenti negli esseri umani e molti di loro sono causati da nuovi virus», afferma l’Oms in un comunicato congiunto con l’Organizzazione mondiale per la salute animale e il programma ambientale delle Nazioni Unite.
La trasmissione del virus Covid all’uomo proprio per questa via è una delle teorie principali degli esperti nominati dall’Oms rispetto alle origini di Sars-CoV-2. Oltre alla sospensione delle vendite, le organizzazioni internazionali chiedono il miglioramento delle norme igieniche in questi mercati tradizionali per ridurre sia la trasmissione da uomo a uomo che il contagio tra commercianti e clienti. Chiedono inoltre norme per controllare l’allevamento e la vendita di animali selvatici destinati a essere venduti nei mercati per il consumo umano.
Le organizzazioni chiedono poi di formare ispettori veterinari per applicare queste nuove regole e rafforzare i sistemi di sorveglianza. Al fine di rilevare rapidamente nuovi agenti patogeni e lanciare campagne di informazione e sensibilizzazione per commercianti e clienti.
