A parlare all’Adnkronos Salute è virologo Andrea Crisanti, direttore del Laboratorio di Microbiologia e Virologia dell’Azienda ospedaliera di Padova e docente di Microbiologia dell’ateneo veneto.

Lo scienziato prosegue: “Il primo caso in Italia di variante brasiliana non vuol dire ancora niente, ma è un segnale del fatto che non siamo difesi dalle varianti di Sars-CoV-2. E visto che sembra da alcuni primi studi che quella brasiliana risponda meno al vaccino, se si incominciano a vedere casi dispersi in tutta Italia e qualche cluster bisogna agire con prontezza. Soprattutto se si conferma una minore protezione da parte del vaccino, mi dispiace ma rimane solo un’opzione: bloccare tutto”.
“Se è un caso isolato va bene e rimane tale, ma se si incominciano a vedere più casi e si dovesse vedere che la variante brasiliana è effettivamente resistente al vaccino allora rimane solo un’opzione, ripeto: bloccare tutto per impedire che si diffonda. Significa lockdown duro, non con le zone rosse. Non possiamo permetterci di mandare all’aria il vaccino. Non scherziamo”, spiega Crisanti.
A preoccupare il virologo sono alcuni lavori scientifici condotti sulla variante in questione che mostrano che “i sieri dei vaccinati hanno una limitata capacità di bloccarla. Da un punto di vista epidemiologico non si sa quanto effettivamente siano resistenti i vaccinati alla variante. E’ un’informazione ancora tutta da acquisire – puntualizza – ma sembra che gli anticorpi abbiano una capacità del 30%”, diminuita cioè del 70%. “Questo non vuol dire che le persone immunizzate non dimostreranno poi di resistere agli attacchi della variante brasiliana. Ma se dovesse essere così sarebbe un problema. Se incominciasse a diffondersi e si vedesse qualche impatto sui vaccinati, il discorso cambierebbe e si farebbe più allarmante”.
