Covid tornerà ogni anno? “La società dovrà imparare a convivere con il Covid in modo simile all’influenza, per questo è improbabile che tornino di nuovo i lockdown come li abbiamo vissuti nel corso di quest’anno”. Ne è convinto l’ufficiale medico capo del Regno Unito, Chris Whitty, secondo il quale “non è realistico pensare che la politica di blocco dei confini possa impedire l’ingresso di nuove varianti”, per questo bisognerà cominciare ad abituarsi all’idea che l’infezione da Coronavirus sarà una costante, come succede con i più comuni virus influenzali.

Intervenendo a un webinar della Royal Society of Medicine, il capo consulente medico inglese ha affermato che l’allentamento delle restrizioni Covid che sono in vigore nel Paese dallo scorso dicembre porterà probabilmente l’indice Rt a superare la soglia di guardia di 1, con il rischio che le varianti prendano piede e si diffondano rapidamente.

Whitty ha aggiunto che la maggior parte degli esperti crede che il Covid non vada via e che alla fine dovrà essere gestito in modo simile all’influenza. Quest’ultima può arrivare ad uccidere da 20.000 a 25.000 persone all’anno quando è particolarmente aggressiva.

“Non è l’influenza, è una malattia completamente diversa, ma il punto che sto sottolineando è che qui c’è una patologia stagionale molto pericolosa che uccide migliaia di persone ogni anno e la società ha scelto un modo particolare per aggirarla”, ha detto. In questo scenario, ha sottolineato l’esperto, diventano importantissimi i vaccini, le cui tecnologie col tempo saranno perfezionate al punto che potremmo affrontare anche nuove varianti che saranno identificate in futuro:

“È probabile che in un paio d’anni – ha detto – avremo un ampio portafoglio di vaccini disponibili e tra cui scegliere. Intanto, però, è necessario adottare un approccio cauto. Quello che dobbiamo fare è trovare un equilibrio che effettivamente mantenga la circolazione del Coronavirus a un livello basso, riduca al minimo le morti come meglio possiamo, ma in un modo che la popolazione riesca a tollerare”.
