Il coronavirus è arrivato anche in Antartide, l’unico continente finora risparmiato.
E’ stato infatti confermato ieri un focolaio di SarsCov2 nella stazione di ricerca cilena Bernardo O’Higgins (sita nella parte occidentale del continente) con 36 contagiati, che sono già stati trasferiti nella città di Punta Arenas per iniziare l’isolamento. A riportarlo sono alcuni media cileni, come il quotidiano La Tercera e il sito della radio Bio Bio Chile.
L’allerta di un possibile arrivo del coronavirus era già scattato la scorsa settimana. Alcuni funzionari, risultati poi positivi, erano andati nella base per svolgere dei lavori.
“Dei 102 test fatti nella stazione di ricerca Villa Las Estrellas e analizzati a Punta Arenas, è risultata una persona positiva al SarsCov2 e otto tracciate come contatti stretti. Tutti saranno trasferiti a Punta Arenas per stare in quarantena”, ha precisato Eduardo Castillo, segretario di Salute della regione di Magellano.
Nella base O’Higgins (una delle 13 strutture cilene in Antartide) invece, su 60 tamponi fatti nel fine settimana, 36 sono risultati positivi, tra civili e militari, ora in isolamento nelle residenze sanitarie di Punta Arenas.
Hanne Nielsen, ricercatrice dell’università della Tasmania, impegnata in un progetto che esamina l’impatto dello stop della stagione turistica in Antartide. “La presenza del virus in questo continente può avere molte implicazioni in molte aree, dalla pianificazione alla logistica delle attività umane”, ha dichiarato.
