Pazienti sudafricani che hanno già contratto il Coronavirus sono stati contagiati una seconda volta dalla nuova variante del Covid-19 che circola nel paese. A renderlo noto è stato Anthony Fauci, riportando il contenuto di conversazioni telefoniche avute con i colleghi sudafricani.
“Quando abbiamo comunicato con i nostri colleghi in Sudafrica, ci hanno detto che stava accadendo qualcosa di strano, che gente contagiata diversi mesi fa ora con questa nuova variante risulta nuovamente colpita dall’infezione”, ha dichiarato Fauci parlando con NbcNews. “Il che equivale a dire che la risposta immunitaria indotta dalla prima infezione non era sufficiente a prevenire il secondo contagio”.
Tuttavia, ha sottolineato Fauci, il vaccino sembra essere “buono o migliore del contagio nel prevenire una nuova infezione”.
“Il vaccino sembra di per sé migliore nel provocare quel tipo di protezione”, ha aggiunto il Direttore del National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
