“Noi dell’OMS non sosteniamo i lockdown come principale misura di controllo del coronavirus”, ha dichiarato David Nabarro a The Spectator.
“L’unico caso in cui crediamo che un lockdown sia giustificato è quando permette di guadagnare tempo per riorganizzare e riunire le risorse, proteggere gli operatori sanitari che sono esausti, ma in generale preferiremmo non farlo”, ha continuato Nabarro.
Quest’ultimo, co-direttore dell’Institute of Global Health Innovation dell’Imperial College di Lodra, è uno degli inviati speciali del direttore generale dell’OMS per contrastare il nuovo coronavirus.
Nabarro ha ricoperto altri ruoli importanti in precedenza: nel 2014 inviato speciale del Segretario generale dell’ONU sull’Ebola e nel 2016, sempre per le Nazioni Unite, combatteva contro l’epidemia di colera ad Haiti.
I danni collaterali dei lockdown sono ormai noti a tutto il pianeta, specialmente ai Paesi più poveri.
“Basta guardare cosa è successo all’industria del turismo nei Caraibi – afferma Nabarro – o nel Pacifico. Ai piccoli agricoltori di tutto il mondo. La povertà potrebbe raddoppiare nel mondo entro il prossimo anno e potremmo avere oltre il doppio di bambini malnutriti“.
Alcuni scienziati, 6000 per la precisione, a riguardo, hanno firmato una petizione per chiedere la fine dei lockdown evidenziandone i danni collaterali non solo economici ma anche psicologici, fisici e sociali.
La soluzione alternativa proposta, però, non entusiasma Ghebreyesus: “Mai nella storia della salute pubblica l’immunità di gregge è stata utilizzata come strategia per rispondere a un’epidemia, per non parlare di una pandemia”, ha detto.
“Lasciare che il Covid-19 circoli in modo incontrollato significa consentire infezioni, sofferenze e morte non necessarie”, ha concluso il DG dell’OMS.
