Crisanti su variante indiana –  «Se la variante indiana di Sars-CoV-2 è stata trovata in Veneto, vuol dire che è già ampiamente diffusa anche altrove. Perché il nostro Paese ha una bassissima capacità di sorveglianza, non ha la sensibilità necessaria per intercettare tempestivamente» i mutanti. «Ed io sono mesi che dico che bisogna creare un sistema di sorveglianza adeguato in Italia, che ancora non c’è».

È la riflessione del virologo Andrea Crisanti, dopo che oggi il governatore del Veneto Luca Zaia ha annunciato i primi due casi di variante indiana – padre e figlia di ritorno dall’India – confermati sul territorio regionale, all’Ulss Pedemontana di Bassano, e altri due casi in valutazione in attesa di conferma. «Il problema è che – chiarisce all’Adnkronos Salute il direttore del Dipartimento di medicina molecolare dell’università di Padova – tutte queste nuove varianti rappresentano una minaccia sia alle riaperture, per le quali è già un problema la variante inglese, ma sono una minaccia anche al programma di vaccinazione. Vanno monitorate e noi ancora non abbiamo la capacità per farlo».

«Quella indiana – prosegue Crisanti – sembra una variante che ha un’elevata capacità di trasmissione e, sulla base delle mutazioni che la caratterizzano, potrebbe avere anche una certa resistenza al vaccino». Se fosse confermato questo aspetto «si abbasserebbe la soglia di protezione. Ciò significa che se una persona vulnerabile è protetta dall’infezione da variante inglese/europea, con questa potrebbe non esserlo altrettanto e fare una malattia più grave».

Il problema, però, per Crisanti «è generale». Il dramma dell’India «non si può spiegare solo con carenze strutturali, non è questa e basta la questione. Al di là della situazione sanitaria particolare, può accadere ovunque e lo abbiamo visto: laddove c’è trasmissione elevata del virus, c’è più probabilità che emergano varianti e, se si aggiunge anche il vaccino, il rischio è che si creino varianti resistenti» alle iniezioni scudo. L’ideale quindi «sarebbe vaccinare in una situazione di chiusura – conclude il virologo – Invece noi stiamo facendo l’opposto. È impressionante. Incredibile».
