Tarme della farina – L’approvazione dell’Unione Europea al nuovo alimento: è il primo via libera ad un insetto come alimento. Le ultime notizie dall’Italia e dal mondo tutte le ultime news aggiornate 24 ore su 24.

Gli Stati membri hanno approvato una proposta della Commissione europea che consente l’uso di vermi della farina gialli essiccati come nuovo alimento. A seguito di una rigorosa valutazione scientifica da parte dell’Efsa, l’Agenzia europea per la sicurezza alimentare, è arrivata la prima vera autorizzazione a immettere gli insetti come nuovi alimenti sul mercato dell’Ue.  

Il nuovo alimento può essere utilizzato come un insetto essiccato intero come spuntino. O come ingrediente in numerosi prodotti alimentari, ad esempio come polvere in prodotti proteici, biscotti o prodotti a base di pasta.    

“La strategia Farm to Fork identifica gli insetti come una fonte proteica alternativa che può supportare la transizione dell’Ue verso un sistema alimentare più sostenibileMilioni di persone consumano già insetti ogni giorno“, spiega la Commissione in una nota. Inoltre, “la Fao qualifica gli insetti come una fonte di cibo sana e altamente nutriente, ricca di grassi, proteine, vitamine, fibre e minerali”. La decisione formale della Commissione sarà adottata nelle prossime settimane. 

Tarme della farina, la decisione dell’EFSA

L’Efsa, che ha sede a Parma, in conclusione di una valutazione fatta su richiesta dell’azienda francese di allevamento di insetti Agronutris, aveva deciso – a gennaio – che le larve di vermi della farina sono sicure da mangiare “come un insetto intero essiccato o come polvere”.     

A causa della sua elevata composizione di proteine ​​e fibre, “non ci sono svantaggi nutrizionali nel loro consumo”, hanno sottolineato gli esperti, ma sono necessarie ulteriori ricerche su possibili reazioni allergiche.         

L’Efsa sta inoltre esaminando anche richieste su grilli e cavallette, per determinare se siano adatti al consumo. Si stima che un migliaio di specie vengano consumate in Africa, Asia e America Latina. Ma nell’Ue, gli allevamenti di insetti (poche migliaia di tonnellate prodotte all’anno) vengono utilizzati principalmente per nutrire gli animali da allevamento, in particolare il pesce, in un mercato in forte espansione.
