È il dispositivo di protezione più utilizzato da quando è in atto la pandemia da Covid-19: leggera e comoda da indossare. Ma una singola mascherina chirurgica gettata irresponsabilmente, dai marciapiedi alle spiagge rilascia migliaia di fibre microscopiche che minacciano l’ambiente marino, fino a 173mila microfibre al giorno.
Questo il risultato della ricerca condotta da un team di chimici del dipartimento di Scienze dell’Ambiente e della Terra dell’Università di Milano-Bicocca dal titolo “The release process of microfibers: from surgical face masks into the marine environment”, autori Francesco Saliu, Maurizio Veronelli, Clarissa Raguso, Davide Barana, Paolo Galli, Marina Lasagni, pubblicata sulla rivista Environmental Advances.
Lo studio
Lo studio ha approfondito il meccanismo di degradazione foto-ossidativa delle fibre di polipropilene presenti nei tre strati delle mascherine chirurgiche e ha fornito un primo dato quantitativo relativo alla cessione di microplastiche. Per le mascherine, infatti, così come succede per molti altri oggetti di uso quotidiano, il dato relativo alla stabilità oltre il limite di utilizzo non era disponibile in letteratura.
Il lavoro sperimentale è stato condotto sottoponendo mascherine usa e getta disponibili commercialmente ad esperimenti di invecchiamento artificiale, designati per simulare ciò che avviene nell’ambiente, quando una mascherina abbandonata inizia a degradarsi a causa dell’esposizione agli agenti atmosferici e, in particolare, alla radiazione solare. Un processo che può durare diverse settimane prima che il materiale giunga al mare, dove è poi sottoposto a stress meccanici prolungati indotti dal moto ondoso. È qui che avviene il maggior rilascio di microfibre.
Le misure condotte con tecniche di microscopia elettronica e microspettroscopia infrarossa hanno evidenziato come una singola mascherina chirurgica esposta alla luce UV-A per 180 ore sia in grado di rilasciare centinaia di migliaia di particelle del diametro di poche decine di micron.
Inquinamento mascherine, gli effetti sul mare
Gli effetti di queste microfibre sugli organismi marini sono ancora da determinare. A questo proposito è in corso una collaborazione con i ricercatori del MaRHE center, il centro di ricerca e alta formazione dell’Ateneo alle Maldive. Come già acclarato per altre tipologie di microplastiche, quali ad esempio quelle prodotte dalla degradazione dei materiali utilizzati per il confezionamento di alimenti o generate durante il lavaggio di tessuti sintetici in lavatrice, sono possibili sia danni da ostruzione in seguito ad ingestione, sia effetti tossicologici dovuti alla veicolazione di contaminanti chimici e biologici. Preoccupa inoltre la presenza di frazioni sub-micrometriche, potenzialmente capaci di attraversare le barriere biologiche.
“Speriamo che questo nostro lavoro possa sensibilizzare verso un corretto conferimento delle mascherine a fine utilizzo e promuovere l’implementazione di tecnologie più sostenibili”, commentano Francesco Saliu e Marina Lasagni, rispettivamente ricercatore e docente del dipartimento di Scienze dell’Ambiente e della terra di Milano-Bicocca.
