L’annuncio l’ha dato lo stesso Elon Musk nelle scorse ore, durante un incontro informale sul social network vocale Clubhouse, anche se l’esperimento risale probabilmente a un punto non precisato degli ultimi mesi.

Durante la diretta su Clubhouse (la stessa che ha mandato in tilt l’ancora giovane piattaforma basata sugli audio), l’imprenditore ha condiviso una manciata di aggiornamenti su un progetto che in realtà progredisce stabilmente da anni. Nella fattispecie le versioni preliminari del chip pensato per trasformare l’attività del cervello in segnali interpretabili dai computer sono già state create, e pochi mesi fa ne erano stati effettuati i primi impianti utilizzando dei maiali come cavie.

I chip Neuralink sono sostanzialmente antenne dotate di filamenti flessibili ed estremamente sottili, che per essere maneggiati richiedono l’utilizzo di complessi robot. Questi elementi devono essere posti a contatto con il cervello per captare al meglio l’attività neuronale dei soggetti e ricevere o trasmettere impulsi che poi il cervello o i computer interpretano come informazioni e comandi.

La novità annunciata in queste ore è che alla tipologia di soggetti utilizzati per gli esperimenti si sono aggiunte le scimmie. E che le operazioni stanno procedendo bene. “Abbiamo già una scimmia con un impianto wireless nel cranio, che può giocare ai videogame usando solo il pensiero e sembra del tutto serena. L’impianto è invisibile a occhio nudo ed è impossibile risalire dell’esterno a dove sia stato posizionato“.

Stando a Musk un ispettore federale del dipartimento dell’agricoltura avrebbe visitato i laboratori Neuralink buone definendo positivo il trattamento riservato ai soggetti. Nel futuro prossimo Musk ha ipotizzato di poter far giocare più scimmie a Pong tra di loro. Ma per il futuro a medio e lungo termine i piani per Neuralink sono decisamente più ambiziosi.

I chip avranno il compito di aiutare pazienti con deficit neurologici e sensoriali a riacquistare funzionalità perdute. Dall’udito alla vista passando alle funzioni motorie e cognitive. Ancora più in là Musk immagina che uomini e macchine (ma anche uomini tra loro) possano comunicare utilizzando il pensiero come canale parallelo. O addirittura che l’intera coscienza e memoria di una persona possano essere salvate in digitale per crearne una copia da riutilizzare dopo la morte.
