Papa Francesco ha incontrato questa mattina nella città santa di Najaf il grande ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, uno dei religiosi più anziani dell’Islam sciita, per consegnare un messaggio di coesistenza pacifica, esortando gli stessi musulmani a farsi prossimi delle minoranze irachene a lungo assediate e vessate. “Il Santo Padre – ha detto il portavoce vaticano Matteo Bruni – ha sottolineato l’importanza della collaborazione e dell’amicizia fra le comunità religiose perché, coltivando il rispetto reciproco e il dialogo, si possa contribuire al bene dell’Iraq, della regione e dell’intera umanità”.
E ancora: “L’incontro è stata l’occasione per il Papa di ringraziare Al-Sistani perché, assieme alla comunità sciita, di fronte alla violenza e alle grandi difficoltà degli anni scorsi, ha levato la sua voce in difesa dei più deboli e perseguitati, affermando la sacralità della vita umana e l’importanza dell’unità del popolo iracheno. Nel congedarsi dal Grande Ayatollah, il Santo Padre ha ribadito la sua preghiera a Dio, Creatore di tutti, per un futuro di pace e di fraternità per l’amata terra irachena, per il Medio Oriente e per il mondo intero”.

“L’incontro fra i due è un primo passo di un processo”, ha detto ieri Paul Richard Gallagher, “ministro degli esteri” vaticano. I due hanno parlato privatamente per circa cinquanta minuti, un passo storico dopo i ripetuti incontri avvenuti in passato fra Francesco e il Grande Imam di Al-Azhar. Dice invece il cardinale Pietro Parolin, segretario di Stato: “Questo viaggio è importante per il dialogo interreligioso. L’incontro con al-Sistani di questa mattina è la prima parte di questo appuntamento – l’incontro del Papa alla piana di Ur con i leader religiosi – per ricordare che siamo tutti fratelli”.
Dopo l’incontro al-Sistani ha affermato che le autorità religiose hanno un ruolo nella protezione dei cristiani iracheni e ha detto che dovrebbero vivere in pace e godere degli stessi diritti degli altri iracheni.
Discorsi e mediazioni
Sono mesi che Santa Sede e l’entourage di al-Sistani lavorano a questo incontro. Dettagli ed eventuali passi sono stati discussi insieme, con la mediazione di Louis Raphaël I Sako, cardinale e patriarca cattolico iracheno, patriarca di Babilonia dei Caldei, che ha fatto più volte la spola fra Roma e Bagdad. L’incontro ha toccato tutte le questioni che affliggono le minoranze irachene, non solo quella cristiana. Francesco auspica che sia lui a guidare la difesa delle minoranze e il loro reintegro nella vita civile del Paese.
Il Papa è arrivato presto a Najaf ed è entrato nella abitazione del Grande Imam all’interno del Santuario sormontato da una cupola verde. Secondo la tradizione sciita, al suo interno sono seppelliti Adamo, Eva e Noé. Al-Sistani è autorità religiosa guardata con rispetto anche da sunniti e curdi grazie anche alla sua interpretazione della rivelazione islamica quietista che predica l’astensione delle autorità religiose dall’attività politica diretta. Nel 2004 sostenne le libere elezioni in Iraq dando un contributo alla pacificazione del Paese. Nel 2014 invitò gli iracheni a ribellarsi all’Isis. E Nel 2019, quando la popolazione scese in piazza in segno di malcontento contro il carovita e l’instabilità politica nazionale chiese ai manifestanti di rifuggire dalla violenza. Chiese poi le dimissioni del governo e la riforma elettorale.
