E’ salito a 18 il bilancio provvisorio delle vittime dell’alluvione in India, provocata dal crollo di un costone di ghiacciaio proveniente dall’Himalaya. Almeno 200 i dispersi. Il governo dello stato di Uttarakhand ha riferito del ritrovamento di 18 corpi e la maggior parte dei circa 200 dispersi lavorava nelle due centrali elettriche della zona.
Alcuni sono rimasti intrappolati in due gallerie invase dall’acqua, dal fango e dai detriti. Dodici persone sono state salvate da uno dei tunnel ieri, ma altre 25-35 sono ancora intrappolate nel secondo.
Oltre duemila tra poliziotti e militari sono impegnati nei soccorsi riferisce il capo dell’agenzia nazionale per le emergenze. Si continua a cercare all’interno di tunnel lunghi chilometri dove si stima siano rimaste intrappolate decine di lavoratori impegnati nella costruzione delle dighe.
Con la strada principale spazzata via, i soccorritori hanno dovuto scalare il fianco di una collina con le corde per raggiungere l’ingresso. E stanno usando macchinari pesanti per rimuovere tonnellate di rocce.
“Se questo incidente fosse accaduto la sera, dopo l’orario di lavoro, la situazione non sarebbe stata così grave in quanto gli operai sarebbero stati a casa”, ha detto il premier Trivendra Singh Rawat ai giornalisti.
